投光范圍就是指燈具所提供的標準照度范圍的大小，它決定于人們的活動范圍和被照物體的體積及面積等。如餐桌所需的投光范圍就是餐桌的面積;乒乓球臺所需的投光范圍就是球桌的面積;壁畫則應使光線照射到整個畫面;起居室內休息、待客的地方，則應使光線照射到整個沙發座位。有些時候為了強調景物中某些位置，比如畫面的某一點，雕塑的某個局部，則可增設專用燈具，以取得預期效果。
